Vernie Bryan Nichols, known to many as Buddy, passed away on September 12, 2026, in Bellevue, Michigan. He was born on August 9, 1939, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the son of Joel and Lillian (Hopper) Nichols. On September 5, 1968, he married Linda Joyce Wright in Charlotte.

Buddy was a dedicated family man whose life was marked by hard work, faith, and the things he loved most. He was known as an extremely hard worker and gave 30 years of service to Johnson Lumber Company before retiring. Even after retirement, he was not one to sit still. He went on to work for D&J Millwright and continued there until he turned 80.

He loved old cars and had a strong mechanical mind. Buddy could fix or create almost anything, and that gift was part of who he was. He and his son-in-law, Frank, spent countless hours designing and building dune buggies together. He especially enjoyed taking his 1950 Lincoln and 1965 Mustang, which he restored, to car shows. He also enjoyed salmon fishing, camping at Silver Lake with family and friends, finding pleasure in time spent outdoors and in the hobbies that brought him happiness.

His faith and the Church of Christ were a very important part of his life. That steady devotion helped shape the way he lived and the way he cared for others.

Vernie was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Edward Charles, Keith Charles; daughter, Colleen Fisher; granddaughter, Samantha Cook; brother, Harold Nichols; and sister, Sarah (Bob) Lockridge.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda; daughter, Rae Jane (Frank) Cortright of Olivet, son, Jodee (Sandy) Nichols of Jackson; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brother, James (Dianna) Nichols of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Buddy will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Bellevue Church of Christ, 22980 13 Mile Rd, Bellevue, Michigan 49021.

Those desiring may make contributions in Vernie's memory to Dresses for Hope (checks may be made out to Linda Nichols) 230 East Street, Apt. A, Bellevue, MI 49021.
