Richard Lee Shirk, known to many as “Shirky or Shirk”, passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2026, in Charlotte, Michigan. He was born on December 17, 1958, in Portland, Indiana, the son of Jerry and Donna Sue (Denney) Shirk.
Shirk graduated from Jay County High School in 1977, carrying forward a passion for life that he was known for. He dedicated his career as a blaster in several different quarries, showcasing his hard work and determination.
Shirk was the life of the party and never met a stranger. He had a unique ability to make friends everywhere he went. His warm personality endeared him to many, making even brief encounters feel special.
Rick adored his mother and cherished the memories they built throughout his life. He enjoyed working at Rose Acres Greenhouse in Charlotte, where his love for nature and hard work flourished. Outside of work, Richard loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle and cherished trips to Sturgis, South Dakota, where he found adventure and camaraderie among fellow riders.
Rick is survived by his mother, Donna Sue Shirk of Portland, Indiana; wife, Jane of Charlotte; children, Hilary Shirk of Indiana, Coty (Erin) Shirk of Indiana; step-children, Michele (Charlie) Strickland of Indiana, Michael Wilhelm of Indiana, Shannon (Tanisha) Kingsbury of Michigan, Teresa Kingsbury of Michigan; numerous grandchildren; sister, Jari Sue (Bruce) Counterman of Indiana; and nephew, Crist (Jamie) Counterman of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Lee Shirk, whom he loved dearly
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 7 P.M. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home 208 N. Commerce Street, Portland, Indiana 47371. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 P.M.to 7 P.M. at the funeral home.
