Harold B. Smuts Harold Smuts, 85 passed peacefully into the presence of His Lord on Monday, April 3, in Charlotte. Harold was born May 13, 1931 in Lansing, the son of Gara and Kathryne Smuts. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1948. After the death of his father that year, he worked the family farm in Charlotte where he lived until his death. In 1952 he married Phyllis Campbell and they raised five children on their family farm. He was employed for approximately 20 years by Allen Packing Co., Charlotte, and then for Charlotte Public Schools where he retired in May 1993 after 22 years as a maintenance electrician. He was a licensed electrician and upon retirement continued that work. He also worked part-time for Smuts Farms. For many years Harold was an active member of the Gideons International. He enjoyed serving the Lord at Chester Gospel Church for many years and then for the past 20 years at Calvary Baptist Church of Charlotte, where he is a member. Harold is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Smuts (Campbell), his daughter-in-law Jeaneen Smuts, his children, Diane (Rick) Skeen of Ogden, Utah; Nancy (Doug) Garnaat of Charlotte; Ann (Jim) VanderMey of Byron Center, MI; Gary Smuts of Las Vegas, Nevada: 12 grandchildren, Duane (Maria) Smuts, Sarah (Mike) Hoagg, Karla (Kris) Lewis, Ryan (Christy) Skeen, Eric Garnaat, Kyle (Sarah) Garnaat, Luke Smuts, Leslie (Walter) Slover, Kayla (Jason) Magnuson, Ashley VanderMey, Alex (Sandy) VanderMey, Evan VanderMey: and 14 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Charles Stults, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Al and Barbara Sundberg, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Beverly Campbell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, June Stults, and son Mark Smuts. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM, at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastors H. Albert Sundberg Jr. and Mark Booth officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, April 7, 2017, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
