Donna Jean Barrus

Donna Jean Barrus, age 99, a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was born on January 5, 1927, in Ovid, Michigan, Donna graced the world with her warmth and strength for nearly a century, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in family and cherished memories.

A proud graduate of Ovid High School in 1945, Donna carried the values instilled in her early life throughout her years. She spent the majority of her life dedicating herself to her family, finding her greatest joy and accomplishment in nurturing those closest to her. Her devotion as a wife and mother was the cornerstone of her identity, and her family remained the center of her heart and her proudest achievement.

Donna was known for her hardworking nature and loving spirit. She embraced life with passion, reveling in her many interests and hobbies which brought joy not only to herself but also to those around her. An avid sports enthusiast, Donna was a huge fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons. Beyond her love for sports, she was a talented baker whose cinnamon rolls, pies, and sticky buns were treasured treats that brought comfort and smiles to family gatherings.

Her hands were never still, for she also cared tenderly for her large vegetable garden, preserving the harvest through diligent canning, a testament to her nurturing soul and hard work. She enjoyed spending time golfing and bowling with friends whenever possible. Donna and David spent many winters in Florida, embracing the sunshine and warmth.

Donna is survived by her children, Carol May; Tom Barrus, Ron Barrus, Doug (Cindy) Barrus, Dan (Anne) Barrus; 15 grandchildren;  numerous great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Michelle Barrus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Clara Christine (Schonshack) Vance; husband, David; sons, Gary Barrus, Dave Barrus; daughter-in-law, Cindy Barrus; son-in-law, Gary May; sister, Doris (Earl) Moore; brother, Harry (Susan) Vance.

In keeping with Donna's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
